Inverness

Inverness
The capital of Highlands is an attractive city, with a number of points of interest. It works as a base for whisky exploration, but it suffered in that on two occasions we only walked around the central area a bit without any in-depth activities.

Places to Eat

Castle Tavern Pub & Restaurant ♥ offers dining in a smallish room upstairs, with the pub below it. Nice Scottish food, especially cullen skink that can be either an appetizer or a main. The service was ok until we offered dessert which failed to show up long after we finished our coffee. Last visit: Spring 2023.

Hootananny ♥♥, a popular place in the semi-pedestrian city center has a nice pub atmosphere on the ground level and offers excellent traditional food at very reasonable prices. There is almost daily live music on the upper level, but on a weeknight, the performance started too late for our ability to enjoy. Last visit: Spring 2015.

McGonnagal’s ♥ is a steakhouse a block up the street from the main city bridge. Good atmosphere, nothing to complain about regarding the food, and reasonable prices. Last visit: Spring 2015.

Lodging

Hotel Glenmoriston ♥ on the quay in Inverness center. Smallish rooms but fully adequate and well-maintained, even if slightly dated. Several rooms are in a separate building next door. Not enough sound isolation at night, but that is a frequent issue in British hotels. All necessary amenities, an excellent bar, and a good restaurant on the premises. Parking lot onsite. Very extensive breakfast.
