Stupid spammer bots
July 6th, 2008
Remember my post on spammers’ creativeness? Lately, I’ve been bombarded quite regularly with bot-produced comments that appear as “compliments” from accidental readers. The idea, of course, is that I’ll take them for genuine praise and allow them through my spam controls, opening the door for future deluge.
This looks like a genuine praise from a discerning reader, doesn’t it?
I read similar article also named Happy Birthday Kimmy!, and it was completely different. Personally, I agree with you more, because this article makes a little bit more sense for me.
The article in question is here.

Aren’t they special. I’ve seen similar comments on ane of the sports blogs I read. They start out with a complement, then move on to telling about another site, It’s very special.
In a non-spammy way, thought I’d let you know I finally got my blog started. I’m still figuring out WordPress, so there’s likely to be some glitches yet.

Welcome to the dark side, Vince.
I’m using Word Press Spam Free, and that seems to be working very well.

The only drawback is that some users can’t comment if they have javascript or cookies off.
It’s caught over a thousand spam comments on my blog.
And I just realized that sort of read like spam…
I’m using Akismet WordPress plugin that also works quite well, no complaints so far. The example above was something that Akismet duly caught. If it starts letting these nuggest through, then I’ll be sure to check SpamFree. Thanks, Michelle.
… but it did not get caught by Akismet. What does that mean, I wonder…
Oh, those were things that we’re being caught by Akismet, but I was having to look at the Akismet spam every day to look for “real” comments.
Annoying.
And it means I may look like a spammer, but am actually not?
I’m not sure that you can ever avoid looking at your spam filter entirely… In my experience with Akismet so far, the real comments always get through without a problem, and spam always gets caught… Checking Akismet queue occasionally is all quality control that’s needed…
That’s insidious… I’ve gotten a lot of spam along the lines of “you’re right, I agree with you,” but nothing that actually appropriates entry titles. I hate these guys…
Heh. But Ilya’s Russian. And the Russians do konw how to deal with spammers.
As soon as I get the guy’s address, John, mark my words…
Thing spam free does, though, is keep those comments from ever being submitted in the first place.
I still get moderated comments, I still get people caught in Akismet occasionally, and even more rarely a piece of spam gets through. But otherwise I get next to no spam.
Which is awesome.
